The Snap Lock Origami Box is another interesting origami box model. It was designed by Heinz Strobl. The diagram to this design is in the book “Decorative Origami Boxes” by Rick Beech, p. 28.

Heinz Strobl is a German origami artist who is known for inventing the origami technique called Snapology (Knotology in German). In Snapology long strips of paper are formed into beautiful polyhedra.

But as you can see, Heinz Strobl designs interesting origami boxes as well. The Snap Lock Origami Box is a great example. The concept of this box works like this: Press down on the handles of the box to lock it, press again to unlock it.

Tips for folding this design

The instructions in the diagram suggest to work really precise. Otherwise the mechanism doesn’t work very well. The design is furthermore driven by geometry and thus a lot of pre creasing is involved. But in my opinion very well worth the effort.
